#MaasinAt26 | The City Government of Maasin celebrated its 26th Cityhood Anniversary on August 10, 2026, at the Maasin City Gymnasium, guided by the theme, “Embracing the Future: 26 Years and More of Faith, Culture, and Ajonay.” We were honored to welcome DSWD Regional Director Grace Q. Subong, representing DSWD Secretary Rexlon “Rex” Gatchalian, who was unable to attend due to unfavorable weather conditions in Manila. .
The opening ceremony was attended by Governor Damian G. Mercado and OIC Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations Dr. Leonarda Londina, representing DA RED Rodel G. Macapañas as guest speaker. Joining them were Punong Barangays and SK Chairpersons from Maasin City's 70 barangays, EU-Philippines and UNDP partners, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Hon. Alan Jose Aroy, Hon. Jojo Maraon, Hon. King Ruales, Hon. Engr. Rolly Manalo), and the Sangguniang Panlungsod headed by City Vice Mayor Maria Effie Abiera-Sabandal.
A special highlight was the launching of the Ajonay Chorale, led by conductor Ian Manuel Mercado, promoting music, culture, and local talent.
The celebration also featured the ₱1.8-million Year 3 DOST grant for the STI Ecosystem Development Towards Smart and Sustainable Maasin City Project, as well as a separate DOST grant for the STI-based upgrading of the Hinapu Gamay Women’s Association (HIGAWA) Banana Chips Processing Facility, supporting local livelihood and women’s entrepreneurship. The festivities culminated in the Ajonay Festival Dance Competition, with Pundok sa Nagkahiusang Libhuanon, choreographed by Emman Garcia, emerging as Grand Champion. 26 years of progress—and many more years of faith, culture, and Ajonay
